I'd be suprised if Debian didn't have at least 4x as many installed boxes as Slackware and Gentoo put together. M$FT don't really trust the linux counter stats much these days, since they're going to underrepresent the 'user-friendly' distros and Slackware is the only distro I know of that mentions it anywhere in the install process (initial email sent to root) and it's generally a dead/dying project. Redhat/Mandrake/Gentoo are more likely to be "Wow, I just heard about this Linux thing & it's pretty cool. You're far more likely to find system administrators & developers using Debian people who are knowledgeable, haven't used windows in years, are serious about Linux/Unix and have been this way for years.
Compiling everything takes quite a while, though the end result is one of the advantages of Gentoo. Gentoo is probably the best distribution all around, since it has both a clean CLI environment (should you choose to have it), a brilliant packages system, and great GUI support. Granted, I haven't used the other distributions in more recent times to comment on their progress. Slackware also has a superior etc and rc.d system. Just try being moderately selective in Mandrake. Want über control? Use the expert single package selection. Want to be a bit more selective? Use group selection. Want everything? Just punch the newbie install and be done with it.
Slackware has the best installer for flexibility. I wouldn't dream of doing an HD install of Knoppix.
There is a difference between Debian and Knoppix, however Knoppix is a live CD, debian is not. You managed to point out that knoppix is a system I don't particularly like.
